libraryman on "How know if email "following your blog" is legit?"

I received an email saying that "_____ is now following your blog". there was a stylized picture in it, which I clicked, which opened up a webpage advertisement. This seemed suspicious.
So I looked at the "return Path", which was:
Return-Path: xxxxx@bounces.wp.com where xxxxx is my email address with an equal sign before the '@'.
(the email seems to be from "donotreply@wordpress.com", but "windows live mail" lets you look at the real return path.).
So did I open a malware email? Should I have clicked on that image?
