sinclair_lewis on "How Effective Is Malware Scanning by Hosts?"

I've read the claims by a number of hosts about scanning their servers for malware or other security vulnerabilities, but I can't find any independent reviews. Does anyone have first-hand experience or know of reliable reviews?
